چکیده

A report that a switch of a yeast protein to a 'prion' state triggers diverse phenotypic changes has prompted re-examination of the processes of evolution. To what extent should processes of gene expression and control be interpreted in terms of their capacity to allow future evolution as well as present adaptation?

Increasing Evolvability Considered as a Large-Scale Trend in Evolution

Evolvability is the capacity to evolve. This paper introduces a simple computational model of evolvability and demonstrates that, under certain conditions, evolvability can increase indefinitely, even when there is no direct selection for evolvability. The model shows that increasing evolvability implies an accelerating evolutionary pace. It is suggested that the conditions for indefinitely inc...

The Emergence of Canalization and Evolvability in an Open-Ended, Interactive Evolutionary System

Natural evolution has produced a tremendous diversity of functional organisms. Many believe an essential component of this process was the evolution of evolvability, whereby evolution speeds up its ability to innovate by generating a more adaptive pool of offspring. One hypothesized mechanism for evolvability is developmental canalization, wherein certain dimensions of variation become more lik...

Extended Abstract Software Architecture Evolution – An Integrated Approach in Industry

To improve the capability in being able to understand and analyze systematically software architecture evolution, we introduced in our earlier work a software evolvability model and software architecture evolvability analysis method. This extended abstract reports the integration of the evolvability model and evolvability analysis method in an industrial context.

Adaptation and Ruggedness in an Evolvability Landscape

Evolutionary processes depend on both selection—how fit any given individual may be, and on evolvability—how and how effectively new and fitter individuals are generated over time. While genetic algorithms typically represent the selection process explicitly by the fitness function and the information in the genomes, factors affecting evolvability are most often implicit in and distributed thro...

Software Evolution and Software Evolvability

Our hypothesis is that software systems vary significantly in how easily they can be evolved to remain productive within a changing environment. We call this quality of software systems “evolvability”, defined as the capability of software products to be evolved to continue to serve their customer in a cost-effective way. The concept of evolvability brings together factors from three main areas...
